Tawau: Two Palauh men were fined RM50,000 or six months' jail each by the Sessions Court here Tuesday for having two pieces of turtle plastron (chest portion) and two shells of the green turtle species (Chelonia mydas).
Seico Gantian, 38 and Sipuut Sitali, 40, pleaded guilty before Judge Egusra Ali to committing the offence at the Bulipatuid waters off Semporna about 9am on July 23 this year.
Prosecuting officer from the Kota Kinabalu Wildlife Department Abdul Karim Dakog said both men were detained by marine police on undercover duty.
The police seized the turtle remains listed under Division 1 Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997, from their boat for further action.
Investigation showed that both men did not have any legal approval to have the shells.
The duo were charged under Section 41 (1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 which carries a fine of RM50, 000 or five years' jail or both, on conviction for having protected animals without legal documents.
